Producing outside the main production hubs (i.e. L.A., NYC, Vancouver, Atlanta, London, etc) can take place under a high level of anxiety. Having been on the worrying end of this many years ago, and having hired various production service networks in the early 2000s with unsatisfactory results, we realized a lot of the stress arose from the difficulty in understanding and navigating the inherent production idiosyncrasies of so many places, as well as the local team’s lack of understanding of our standards and work ethic.
Another stressful issue was the dreaded hand-over from the person(s) who was bidding the project to the actual local team overseeing it.
Lastly, over inflated promises, underperforming expectations, lack of transparency, or quite simply a disinterest on the part of the service provider for what in the eyes of a Director would be a successful outcome, (aka, not just financially but creatively). These all conspired to make these projects unnecessarily stressful.
It doesn’t have to be that way.
The way to avoid these issues is to work with a service company that truly understands the local market, and that also understands your market’s way of working. This last point is something that is quite rare in the service world since most production service companies have never produced outside their market, let alone in yours.
